The state of Washington has laws that protect its residents from dangerous dogs. The law says that if any dog aggressively attacks a human, the owner can be charged with a felony. This charge can lead to five years in prison and up to $10,000. This is true even for a dog that has never attacked before.
If an owner in Washington State knows his dog is dangerous, he must contain it inside an enclosure at all times, unless it is both muzzled and restrained. The owner must also place signs on his or her property warning that there is a dangerous dog, and he must register the dog as dangerous. In addition, he must have an insurance policy of at least $250,000
If there is a dangerous dog in your neighborhood, you can file a complaint with the police or with the landlord about the dog if it is not being properly restrained. It's also a good idea to report the presence of such a dog to animal control. If the dog has damaged property or injured a person, don't hesitate to consult with an attorney. Taking legal action may encourage the owner to secure the dog or remove it from the premises.
